Supervisor: Public Works Superintendent | FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Job Description

This position involves manual labor necessary to install and maintain City Infrastructure.

Work is assigned and reviewed for satisfactory performance by the Public Works Director or their designee.

Specific instructions may be given on new duties, but employees are expected to work without constant direction once standard operating procedures are learned.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Load and unload materials and tools from trucks manually
  • Provide traffic control
  • Cut grass, bushes, trees, and branches using hand and power tools
  • Pick up trash along roads and on City-owned property
  • Dig drainage ditches, clean out drains, pipes, streams, and flood control structures manually
  • Install and replace signs
  • Mix cement manually to repair catch basins
  • Provide maintenance such as patching, plastering, painting, and related work within city buildings
  • Perform routine washing and cleaning of city-owned vehicles
  • Drives and operates pickup trucks and other equipment as necessary
  • Perform related work as required

Qualifications

Knowledge of and Ability to:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions precisely
  • Ability to learn and carry out simple mechanical operations such as lubricating lawn maintenance equipment
  • Ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain under adverse weather conditions while carrying heavy equipment or materials
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks such as erecting signs
  • Knowledge of the proper operating procedures and safety practices associated with vehicles, construction equipment, power tools, and hand tools
  • Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools such as string trimmer, chain saw, and leaf blower.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautions of working on public roads and working around construction equipment
  • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully, and firmly with the public

While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. In addition, the employee is required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and smell.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

This job's specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here represent those employee encounters while performing this job's essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and can be exposed to hot or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud in the field.

Special Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license
