Learn to Sail
Our learn-to-sail initiative provides numerous students with their inaugural chance to take the helm of a boat. Through mastering small boat handling skills, students not only acquire self-confidence but also learn the value of responsibility. Those who persist in the Gladstone Sail School program progress within a structured setting, witnessing firsthand how young adults evolve into leaders, serving as inspirations for the next wave of program enthusiasts and leaders. Every year witnesses a seamless transition for students, progressing from learning roles (Seaman, Mate, Skipper) to leadership positions (Junior Leaders), and eventually stepping into teaching roles as certified Instructors.
Whether On Little Bay or abroad, we're proud to nurture local sailors who compete on national and international stages. Our racing program begins with refining dinghy skills and can propel students to whatever heights they aspire. For those driven to excel in performance sailing, we establish the groundwork through our comprehensive Racing Program. Additionally, we collaborate with the Escanaba Yacht Club to offer opportunities in one-design and offshore keelboat racing.
Classes are designed to concentrate on specific racing skills and techniques, incorporating classroom instruction and brief practice races. Prerequisites include completion of Seaman 2nd Class or instructor approval. Sailors should possess a basic understanding of sailing fundamentals, including points of sail, sail controls, boat parts, rigging, derigging, and proper skipper and crew positioning.
Our adult program has proven highly effective in empowering novice sailors to confidently manage their own boats. We customize these sessions to cater to each individual's needs and goals. Whether you're stepping onto a dinghy for the first time or seeking to refresh your sailing skills, our instructors are dedicated to delivering the tailored experience you desire.
Generous contributions from The Gladstone Sail School supporters, parents, and alumni make scholarship funds available for deserving individuals. While our aim is to provide equal access to our programs for every sailor, it's important to note that scholarship funding is finite. 50% scholarships will be awarded based on available funds, a demonstration of financial need, and the child's eagerness to learn sailing.
Given the limited number of scholarships, we encourage applications to be submitted as early as possible. Comprehensive scholarship details and guidelines are outlined in our application, but please feel free to reach out to us with any inquiries. We're here to help!
