Known as one of the most prosperous businesses in the city, Goldstein’s Dry Goods. Samuel Goldstein was born in Russia in August of 1854. He married Dorothy Jacobson, and they had four children. Sam arrived in Gladstone in 1889 and established the store. After 24 years in business, he turned the store over to his only son Sidney on May 18th, 1913. The Goldstein’s moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and retired.
Sidney was born December 4th, 1884, and came to Gladstone at the age of five. After finishing school, he traveled to Chicago and dealt in Real Estate and then held a position with the Mandell Bros. Department Store. He returned to Gladstone to assume responsibility for the family business and was very active with the Elks and the Mason’s. He married Helen Coon from Escanaba on May 2nd, 1918. Sidney sold the store in January of 1924 and moved to Menominee and established a Department Store there.
Hilding Granberg, who was born in Sweden on April 4th, 1890, immigrated directly to Gladstone in 1910. He established a Shoe Store in the Goldstein Building. He married Ruth Anderson and had one son and one daughter. He served in WWI with the American Expeditionary Forces and was very active with the August Mattson American Legion Post. He helped to establish the Ski Club. He served as the President of the Winter Carnival. He was appointed by Governor Kelly as the County Welfare Agent and was in business in Gladstone for 30 years. He passed away on March 22nd, 1945.
